Blue and White ‘Dragon amid Waves’ Vase, Yongzheng Style

A globular danping vase painted in underglaze blue with a five-clawed dragon striding vigorously amid layered, turbulent waves.

Blue and White ‘Dragon amid Waves’ Vase, Yongzheng Style

The vase is finely potted in the elegant danping (globular) form, with a rounded body tapering gracefully to a slender neck, embodying the refined proportions favored during the Yongzheng period. The porcelain body is dense and delicately finished, covered with a smooth, lustrous glaze of exceptional clarity.

‍

The exterior is meticulously painted in underglaze blue with a dynamic five-clawed dragon striding vigorously amidst turbulent waves. The brushwork is exceptionally fine and fluid, rendering the dragon with animated vitality, while the surrounding wave patterns are articulated in carefully layered bands, creating a vivid sense of movement and depth.

‍

The composition reflects both technical precision and symbolic richness: the imperial five-clawed dragon signifies supreme authority, while the rolling seas convey auspicious wishes for stability, harmony, and a realm at peace—“enduring dominion and tranquility across the four seas.”
