An elongated vase painted in soft cobalt blue using the fen shui graduated wash technique with bamboo, peach branches and fluttering bats.

Blue and White ‘Peach, Bat and Bamboo’ Vase, Yongzheng Style

The vase is elegantly potted with a balanced, elongated form, rising from a neatly finished foot to a gently tapering neck. The porcelain body is fine and compact, covered with a smooth, lustrous glaze that enhances the delicacy of the underglaze decoration.

‍

Rendered in a soft and refined cobalt-blue tone, the exterior is painted using the fen shui (graduated wash) technique to depict a harmonious composition of bamboo, peach branches, and fluttering bats. The brushwork is fluid and controlled, with a graceful interplay of density and spacing, creating a composition that is both airy and rhythmically balanced. The bamboo is articulated with clarity and elegance, while the peaches and bats are animated with subtle vitality.

‍

The motif carries layered auspicious symbolism: peaches signify longevity, bats (fu) represent blessings and good fortune, and bamboo symbolizes upright virtue and continuous advancement. Together, they convey the auspicious wish for “blessings and longevity in abundance, with steady rise and prosperity.”
