Doucai ‘Scrolling Vine’ Water-Chestnut Vase, Chenghua Style
A water-chestnut form vase decorated in doucai with a scrolling vine design outlined in underglaze blue and filled with green enamels.

The vase is finely potted in the elegant biqi ping (water-chestnut) form, with a compressed globular body rising to a short neck and gently everted rim, all supported on a neatly finished foot. The porcelain body is delicate and refined, covered with a smooth, luminous glaze.
The decoration is executed in the classic doucai technique: the scrolling vine design is first outlined in underglaze cobalt blue and fired at high temperature, after which translucent green enamels are carefully applied within the outlines and fixed in a second, lower-temperature firing. The result is a harmonious interplay between the crisp blue contours and the softly colored enamel fields.
The composition of continuous, curling vines is rendered with clarity and elegance, reflecting the restrained yet sophisticated aesthetic associated with Chenghua-period wares. The overall effect is one of freshness and refinement, capturing the quintessential charm of early doucai porcelains.
Please note: Dimensions are based on the present example. As each piece is individually fired, slight variations are inherent to the making process.
