Yellow-Ground Blue and White ‘Lotus Scroll’ Revolving Vase, Qianlong Style

A reticulated zhuanxin revolving vase with a rotating inner cylinder, decorated in underglaze blue lotus scrolls against a rich yellow ground.

Yellow-Ground Blue and White ‘Lotus Scroll’ Revolving Vase, Qianlong Style

The vase is ingeniously constructed in the celebrated zhuanxin ping (revolving vase) form, comprising an outer reticulated body and a freely rotating inner cylinder. The structure is achieved through complex sectional firing and the integration of a porcelain mortise-and-tenon mechanism, allowing the inner vessel to turn smoothly within the pierced exterior—an extraordinary demonstration of technical virtuosity.

‍

The exterior is decorated in underglaze blue against a rich yellow ground, with continuous scrolling lotus blooms borne on meandering tendrils. The cobalt is vivid and well-defined, set in striking contrast to the bright yellow enamel, while the reticulated body forms an intricate “jiaotai” (interlocking) pattern, enhancing both visual complexity and mechanical function.

‍

The lotus scroll motif symbolizes continuity and abundance, while the jiaotai structure—literally “harmonious union”—alludes to the cosmic balance between Heaven and Earth, conveying auspicious wishes for prosperity, harmony, and flourishing fortune during a golden age.

‍

Combining sculptural innovation, mechanical ingenuity, and refined decorative artistry, the present work exemplifies the height of technical and aesthetic ambition associated with Qianlong-period imperial porcelains.
